PaktakonText: February Arts Month 2005 in Western Visayas

PaktakonText
February Arts Month 2005

In celebration of National Arts Month this February 2005, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) launches PAKTAKONTEXT, a contest of riddles in Western Visayan languages (i.e., Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, and Aklanon) via texting to a cellphone provided by Globe Telecom.

According to Dr. Zenaida French, Regional Coordinator for Western Visayas of the Committee on Literary Arts (CLA) of the NCCA, the PAKTAKONTEXT is part of the nationwide contest called TEXTULANGPINOY for February Arts Month, with counterpart contests being launched in Luzon, Central Visayas, and Mindanao. Focusing on short verse forms in the regions, such as TEXTSAWIKAIN in the NCR, TEXTIGSIK in Bikol, TEXTIGMO in Central Visayas and Mindanao, TEXTULANGPINOY hopes to revive popular interest in these forms and retrieve them from extinction.

The following are the mechanics of joining:

1. Each entry must be an original riddle in stanza form of 2-3 lines in either Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, or Aklanon. Rhyme is optional. Theme is open.

2. Each entry must be sent as a text message, with the [Answer], [Name], and [Address of the Author], in not more than 160 characters per send, to Globe number 09279245239. (e.g., [Baston ni San Husep, indi maisip. - Ulan. Stephen Javellana, Gen. Luna St., Iloilo City])

3. The contest runs for the whole month of February 2005.

4. There will be prizes of Php. 5,000, Php. 3,ooo, and Php. 2,ooo for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grand prizes. Consolation prizes of Php. 5oo will also be given to the best paktakon per week.

5. Deadline for entries is 3:00 pm of every Friday of the month of February 2oo5; and for all entries, 3:oo pm of Monday, 28 February 2005.

Criteria for the entries to include originality, the quality of the meter, the use of the metaphor and imagery, and depth of insight.

Please see posters and streamers for more details on the contest.

As of February 14, 2oo5, Bombo Radyo Iloilo has extended support to the NCCA-sponsored PAKTAKONTEXT event. Entries may now also be sent to Bombo Radyo Iloilo's text service. Just key in BOMBO [space] FM [space] SERVICE [paktakon]-[answer]-[name] then send to 29765. (e.g., BOMBO FM SERVICE Baston ni San Juan, indi makaptan. - Kalayo. Juan Salcedo, Estancia Iloilo.)
